Make Hay When the Sun Shines? Featured

Dealing with the changing seasons is always challenging for filmmakers and Wind at my Back was no exception. In this photo of Hub (Dylan Provencher) working in the field from Episode 6 – “Something from Nothing”, it appears that he is taking hay off the field on a hot summer day. In reality, Dylan was probably quite cold and wet because it was actually late Fall and it had been raining incessantly.
Haying normally happens in early summer, so there wasn’t any hay in the fields when we went to shoot these scenes. To create the illusion of a hay field, set dressers had to bring in large, round bales of hay and then roll them out in rows. They then had to “fluff up” the rows to make it look like it had been freshly cut. Director Ken Jubenvill had to be quite creative with the angles of his shots because the entire field wasn’t covered with hay. He also had to be somewhat careful not to show too many trees in the background because they were all changing colour and some were quite bare, as you can see in the photo. The weather also presented some logistical problems at this particular location. All of the production trucks parked in a dry field when they arrived but the rain quickly turned it into a mud bog. When it came time to leave (in the middle of the night of course) virtually every truck was stuck and had to be pulled out of the mud with a tractor. I’m sure the farmer who owned the property thought we were all crazy for putting hay back in the field and pulling trucks out of the mud all night, but that’s show biz.

Judy, I always wondered whether Zack was really Cynthia's baby or not. She did another series briefly after WAMB before she left show business. Does anyone know anything more about her? I know that she was not the integral character or characters of this show, but I am just curious.

Wind At My Back is my all time favorite, next to Anne of Green Gables. So many life lessons to be learned from watching the entire series. I also liked Cynthia Belliveau as original Honey. Was she actually expecting a baby and maybe that was reason she didn't return to series. My husband began watching along with me. His favorite is Grace and Mae. My daughter in NC has started following the series. The entire cast of Wind At My Back were excellent in the characters they portrayed. The final 2 hour Christmas episode which left everyone hanging when Hub said goodbye to the Jewish girl was "so sad". So would have enjoyed seeing that played out to a happier ending. I continue to watch the programs over even though I've seen them several times. Wholesome entertainment.

I just happened to watch WAMB one day last year and I was hooked!! Also got my sisters and sister in law hooked. Each actor was subpurb!! I so much enjoyed watching Hub and Fat grow up and also Maisey. May could not have been played by anyone better! I loved when the episodes started in the beginning and went through to the end. Was very disappointed in the ending...It would be great to have it start again and continue where it left off...LOVED the show!!!!

I only wish there could have been a more positive ending with Grace and Mae also. What finally happened between Grace and Van left us hanging

I am grateful for those who made Wind at my Back. My mother got us started earlier this year, then both sisters-in-law came to visit and got hooked. Thanks for the insight about the making of one of the episodes. I wish you could start it up again, ten years later.

I also, preferred the original Honey. The characters seem to actually become friends and the actors chosen couldn't have been better. I particularly liked the performances of the veteran actress Shirley Douglas and the actor who played Grace. Max and Toppy were perfect for their roles, of course, along with the boys. I only wish there could have been a more positive ending with Grace and Mae also. What finally happened between Grace and Van left us hanging. I would have liked nothing better than for this series to go on forever!!

Arlene, I had the same question. Although I liked Laura Bruneau as Honey, I prefered Cynthia Belliveau. She had that extra warmth. Does anyone have an answer to why she left so soon?
