The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up

Today marks the 151st anniversary of the birth of one of the most famous playwrights in the history of children’s literature – J.M. Barrie.  The Scottish novelist, who is fondly remembered for creating the characters Peter Pan, Wendy and the Lost Boys, is one of those authors whose breadth of imagination is shared by only a view and envied by many.

A son of weavers in a small Scottish town, Barrie moved to London and made a career for himself as a playwright.  But it wasn’t until he met the Llewelyn Davies brothers, who he later adopted when both their parents died, that he began to dramatize the world of Neverland and the boy who refused to grow up.  He wrote Peter Pan as a play and left the rights of his work before he died to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, which still profits by it today.

Here is a list of beautiful quotes by Barrie.  It is amazing to see how many lines of wisdom he wrote:

“To love would be an awfully big adventure.”

“Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice everything else for it.”

“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust.”

“Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.”

“When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies.”

“If growing up means it would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!”

“Wendy,’ Peter Pan continued in a voice that no woman has ever yet been able to resist, ‘Wendy, one girl is more use than twenty boys.”

“You know that place between sleeping and awake, that place where you can still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always think of you.”

“Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”

“The reason birds can fly and we can't is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.”

“If you have it [love], you don't need to have anything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter much what else you have.”

“God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December.”

“Shall we make a new rule of life from tonight: always try to be a little kinder than is necessary?”

“I'm not young enough to know everything.”
