We're starting a new feature on the Wind at My Back blog, looking at what was going on in the world 80 years ago. We'll highlight the headlines, the latest inventions, fashion, and entertainment news to give you a taste of what would have been happening in the world outside New Bedford.

The women of New Bedford might have been particularly interested in "The Homemaker" section of the paper, which gave many tips to women, such as:

  • how to effectively arrange a fruit centerpiece (the piece suggests using grapefruits, melons and pineapples instead of more conventional fruit, and also to choose glassware that emphasizes the colour of the fruits)
  • how to avoid foods that will negatively affect one’s appearance (the article suggests that women practice moderation when using condiments like mustard or chili sauce, because “all foods in their proper relation have a place on the menu, and one cannot defy the rules of commonsense in regard to the use of any one of them without paying a penalty in health as well as in beauty”)
  • “If you do not have automatic refrigeration, remember that ice should always be washed before putting it into the icebox.”

Headlines of the day included :

  • Wage-Cut Decision Deferred by Unions Until Mid-October
  • Anti-British Plot Hatched in Turkey by Famous Exiles
  • Mine Local Votes for General Strike in Sydney District
  • Charles Dickens Among Famous Guests of British-American

Some of our favourite ads were for:

  • Ipana Tooth Paste and Massage, “Pink Tooth Brush” is a sign that gums are weak and need…Ipana Tooth Paste and Massage
  • Eight dresses specially designed for Young Matrons at Eaton’s
  • Wrigley’s Chewing Gum: aids digestion and helps your food do you more good

Hi Judy, We believe that the reason the show stopped production was because the government funding that allowed the series to continue filming could only fund a project for 5 years (which is how long WAMB was in production for). If you're referring to its run on INSP though, the show has been returned to the weekday schedule as of this past Monday. :)

This is a great idea for us Wind at my Back and Anne of Green Gables dedicated fans. I prefer the old days in may ways -when families had time for each other and though times were hard people managed to be civil to one another for the most part. I do miss Wind at my Back and am curious as to why it was so abruptly cancelled for a show so popular?

I would love to hear about the baking recipes that were exchanged back in the 30's. A cup of this and a pinch of that..
