Out of the Shadows explores the hidden masterpieces that scientists and art historians have uncovered under already famous pieces of art.  It looks at the reasons why artists such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh often abandoned wonderful original paintings and covered them with completely new images.  Some of these paintings have been hanging on the walls of famous museums for hundreds of years without anyone really knowing what lies under their surfaces.

The film showcases the groundbreaking new technologies used to get between the layers of these pieces of art and asks the question of just how closely scientists and art historians can understand the mind of the artist.
