Even though scandals and corruption were afflicting the country, there were many communities that helped each other during the hard times. Just like the town of New Bedford, in Wind at My Back.
Although the people of New Bedford loved to gossip and talk behind people’s backs, that didn’t mean that they all didn’t care for each other. For example, during the first season of Wind at My Back, Hub and Fat went through some difficult times. Their family was forced to close their hardware store and when tragedy strikes, their mother is forced to leave them with their grandmother in order to find a job. Honey, Hub and Fat’s mother, struggles to find work. No one is hiring anywhere. But finally, luck strikes and she secures a job.
However, the job pays barely enough for her to survive on, not nearly enough to provide for her family. Before long, Honey is forced to find a job elsewhere, so she moves to Toronto. She finds a job in a garment factory, but then she gets seriously ill. Hub and Fat finally convince their reluctant grandmother to have their mother live with them.
Although New Bedford did not seem hospitable at first, Honey and her boys eventually feel more welcome than ever. Honey gets a job as hairdresser and her boys finally have their family back.
It was communities like this that saved people and created jobs/careers for the younger generation.
