Vintage Fashion in New Bedford

The time period in which Wind at My Back is set allowed for some beautiful costumes to be worn by its leading female characters especially.  Veteran costume designer Ruth Secord was the woman who brought the fashion of the 1930s to the forefront of the show.

Having worked on other Sullivan Entertainment productions, including Road to Avonlea, Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story and Butterbox Babies, Ruth was ready for the challenge of creating varied wardrobes that reflected different social classes – whether it was more formal attire for matriarch May Bailey, glamorous pieces for her daughter, Grace, more “home-appropriate” outfits for Honey Bailey or everyday clothes for the townspeople.  Many of their costumes were custom-made.

With such attention to detail, it’s no wonder that the costumes of Wind at My Back are greatly appreciated by fans.  Here is an excerpt from one blog, called 10minutes2breathe, in which the author explains why she finds the style of the clothes so appealing.

“One of the main characters Grace (played by Kathryn Greenwood) is dressed in the most beautiful clothes. The shoes are just so cute and strappy and the hats...please bring back those hats. They are simply adorable. The casual pants women wore were high but not matronly at all. Slip dresses were covered in beautiful see through knits that read so dainty and fine on screen…I look at old pictures of this show and yearn for those styles to come back.”

She said the style reminds her of a time in her late teens when she would visit thrift stores and pick up vintage clothing.

I found "Wind at my Back" one day while channel surfing. I'm hooked! The acting is superb, the story line is very true to the era. "Wind at my Back" brings to life stories my parents and grandparents shared with me about living and growing up during the Depression.

The Wind at my Back series is one of,if not the best, series made. Every actor does a superb job at portraying their character. The costumes are likewise superb and the storylines are exceptional. The directors are to be congratulated. A pity it ended so abruptly. Would love to know where the actors are now and what they are doing. Would love to see them perform in another venue (stage?) Just keep watching the series over and over.

Hi Linda! Thanks for your comment. Kevin Sullivan actually made a follow-up movie to the last season of the show. It's called A Wind at My Back Christmas and it ties up some of the loose ends. You can find it on DVD at Shop At Sullivan - here: http://shopatsullivan.com/dvds/wind-at-my-back-dvds/wind-christmas.html

I just discovered Wind At My Back about 2 months ago. I love this show and am now watching the series from the begining on the INSP network. I came in the middle of the series and watched it till it started over on the 18th. I was disappointed that the series seemed to end so adruptly with no "end" to the story line. Is there a book or somewhere to find the ending to this story? I wish this could've had a better ending....Thank you....Linda
