Announcing The Show Must Go On: A Wind at My Back Fiction Contest

In honour of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), we're holding our own November writing contest. We want to read your ideas about what happened to the New Bedford gang following the end of the series, in the form of a short story (between 1000 and 5000 words). Your story can pick up after either the end of the series (5.13: Pay Back) or after A Wind at My Back Christmas.

Stories should be family-friendly (i.e. consistent with the overall tone of the original show), and have an ending (i.e. no "to be continued" endings). All characters must be from Sullivan Entertainment productions (you may include characters from other Sullivan shows/films, but not the characters of external shows/films).

All entries are due by 12pm EST on Friday, December 2. Winners will be announced no later than Wednesday, December 7. Entries should be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and may be in .doc, .rtf, .pdf, .txt or .html format, or may be pasted into the body of your email.

The winner will receive a Wind at My Back prize pack, including all 5 seasons of the show, and a vintage hat featured on the show.

The winning entry will be featured on our website. Additional entries may also be posted, depending on volume. By submitting your story, you are acknowledging that it may be shared on our blogs, Facebook and other social media platforms.

Good luck, and happy writing!

We absolutely became addicted to this series. We cried, laughed and cried when it all ended. I have never watched anything on TV that just moved me so much. My husband doesn't usually like these types of programs and he was crying with me everyday. He loved this so much he made me record it so we wouldn't miss an episode. When we realized that there wasn't going to be anymore episodes to watch he was just as upset as I was. We were delighted to see the Christmas 2 hour special. I will never forget this program. I wish they would continue the series. We love it.

I'm with you, Valerie! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see things tied up and I cannot help but HOPE that this contest will bring that idea to fruition! It's just NOT FAIR that we all have been left HANGING all these years yearning to know what became of wonderful GRACE, her Mom and all those terrific characters so beautifully portrayed by such fabulous actors. AND PLEASE PLEASE if it does happen do not substitute anyone but Kathy Greenwood for Grace. There is only ONE Grace and that is Miss Greenwood! Sullivan Enterprises, PLEASE give us what we have been asking for all these years! PLEASE FINISH the WAMB story for us!!!

Even though 'Wind At My Back" series came toan abrupt end the story lingered in my heart, I saw many scenarios of what I would have liked to have seen as a continuation of a marvelous saga. The defining characters, Bedford community and the era are depicted with endearing and unforgetable moments. It is really noteworthy that those potentials were left suspended, as it were, and yet will be serving as inspiration for contestants to pick up the gauntlet of writing challenge that was thrown down by the last episode. This is a real page turner event.

How about offering as a prize the opportunity to see Sullivan Entertainment actually use the contestants' ideas by filming them into a real and final series 6 of "Wind at My Back"? It would give all of us viewers and fans of "Wind" some real closure with this family and characters that we have grown to love as we have watched and re-watched the original episodes? Even a half-series (6 eps.) would be better than the way it just cut off after "Pay Back." And the Christmas movie was OK, but we missed seeing Grace, May, and Laura--as well as Ollie Jefferson and the reuniting of Dale Sutton with Grace!
