Recently, we gave an update on Dave Foley, who had a brief cameo as Lewis Allen in Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel. But did you know that Foley was not the only Kid in the Hall to appear in The Sequel?

Megan Follows is staying busy, and is set to return to the stage this January, in an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's 2005 novella The Penelopiad.

Hannah Endicott-Douglas calls the shots in this great behind-the-scenes shot from Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning.

Megan Follows is set to star in another literary adaptation, but this time it is of a different medium altogether.

Check out this video of Jonathan Crombie (Gilbert Blythe) discussing what he needed to learn in order to film Anne of Green Gables.

Did you know that one of Canada's most famous comedians got his start on Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel?

Kids in the Hall

In this exclusive video, Jonathan Crombie talks about what it was like to reunite with Megan Follows working on Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story.

In this behind-the-scenes video clip from the first Anne film, Jonathan Crombie discusses some of the movie magic involved in making a period film.

Jonathan Crombie has played a great many theater roles, but his next project will place him onstage as one of the most heroic figures in both literature and film – Atticus Finch.  His upcoming play, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a co-production between Fort Worth's Casa Mañana and the Dallas Theater Center.

While reading the autobiography of Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables), I was continually amused by the stories she told of the world famous actors and directors she worked with throughout her career.  One of her most entertaining anecdotes came from her time on the set of the Academy Award-winning film, Annie Hall, with director Woody Allen.

In Memory of Colleen Dewhurst

Written by Clare

On this day in 1991, legendary theater actress Colleen Dewhurst passed away from cervical cancer at the age of 67.  Anne of Green Gables fans adore her as Marilla Cuthbert, a role that she took in the last few years of her life.  But it wasn’t the famous characters she played that meant everything to her, it was acting itself.  For Colleen, acting meant “life”.

Remarkable Redheads in History & Film

Written by Clare

A recent article in the Ottawa Citizen posted a brief list of the most famous modern redheads, starting with Anne Shirley in 1908, when Anne of Green Gables was first published. Here is their brief list:

On the day of her audition for Anne of Green Gables, Megan Follows had sticky notes posted all over her room, marked with declarations such as “I am Anne of Green Gables” and “I am 12 years old”.

“I was so nervous.  I was terrified.  [I came] straight off singing a song on a high school stage [and into the film industry].” ~ Jonathan Crombie

Here is an exclusive look at Jonathan Crombie’s memories of his time making Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel – from his impressions of his co-stars Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst, to his own take on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novels.

Kate Middleton finally reached the land of Anne on July 3 and 4, and even posed with the beloved character.  Tess Benger, the actress who is starring as Anne Shirley in Charlottetown’s annual musical production of Anne of Green Gables, was able to meet the Duchess outside the famous hotel, Dalvay by the Sea.

Colleen's Days As Aspiring Actress

Written by Clare

Many of our fans showed a passionate interest in the life of Colleen Dewhurst, who played Marilla Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables.  We related stories from her autobiography of her tomboyish and chatterbox nature as a child.  Here is a look at Colleen as a student at Milwaukee Downer College for Women.  She gives an amusing explanation as to why she officially turned to acting as a profession.

Colleen's Childhood Memories

Written by Clare

After Colleen Dewhurst, who played Marilla Cuthbert, passed away in 1991, her autobiography was finished by friends, family, actors and colleagues, including Kevin Sullivan.  They all contributed their memories of Colleen and the impression she made on their lives.  In remembrance of Colleen, whose birthday was June 3rd, here are a few excerpts from her autobiography that reveal her own impressions of her childhood.

Recently, we gave you exclusive insight into what the process of filming Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story was like for actress Megan Follows.  Now, here are some interview excerpts from her co-star, Cameron Daddo, who played the mysterious writer, Jack Garrison Jr.

Megan's Thoughts on The Continuing Story

Written by Clare

“The attempt had to be, on my part, something I could believe in at least because of how important the character was to me, how important she was to other people.” ~ Megan Follows

When approaching the role of Anne Shirley for the third installment of Kevin Sullivan’s miniseries, The Continuing Story, Megan Follows felt a little trepidation.  The significance of continuing Anne’s story and portraying her in a way that was very true to the character was not lost on her.

Theatre houses across the world are putting on productions of L.M. Montgomery’s celebrated novel, Anne of Green Gables.  So it is gratifying when the focus of attention is switched instead to the author’s seventh book in the series, Rainbow Valley, which has a number of fresh, vivid characters.

Diana Auditions as Anne

Written by Clare

It is hard for many people to imagine anyone playing the role of Anne Shirley besides Megan Follows.  She has become synonymous with the orphan of L.M. Montgomery’s creation - for lovers of both the books and the films.  But what if everyone’s other favourite heroine, Diana Barry, had stepped into Anne’s shoes?  During the casting process in the mid-1980s, this was an actual possibility.

We dug through our Anne archives to find this behind-the-scenes clip of one of the most memorable scenes from the film.

Megan Walks the Runway for Heart Health

Written by Clare

Fans of Megan Follows will be happy to learn that the famous Anne-girl is making women’s health a priority in her life.  On March 24, Megan will be one of 18 Canadian celebrities to take part in Canada’s Heart and Stroke Foundation’s charity fashion show.

Almost 25 years after the making of Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, the film’s actors are still being stopped in the street by excited fans.  According to a recent article, Rosemary Dunsmore, who played Katherine Brooke in The Sequel and Abigail Ward on Road to Avonlea, still gets recognized for the uptight headmistress she played alongside Megan Follows.

Kevin Sullivan recalls that working with Colleen Dewhurst on the set of Anne of Green Gables was like “entering a privileged world of honesty and humor.”  Having been a long time fan of her work in the film and theater industry, he had always pictured the talented actress in the role of Marilla.  Here is a direct excerpt from Colleen’s autobiography in which Kevin explains his own goals for the film and how well Colleen tapped into them.

What is Moody Spurgeon Up To Now?

Written by Clare

Anne:  Moody Spurgeon! Goodness, you look older in you new celluloid collar.
Moody: Thanks, Anne. You look dashing, yourself. You looked as good as the bride.

Moody Surgeon is just one of the many characters that adds humour and charm to the residents of Avonlea.  As one of Gilbert Blythe’s friends and the slightly awkward owner of the house with the infamous ridge pole, Moody was always kind to Anne – even though he did end up with Josie Pye!

Celebrating Colleen Dewhurst

Written by Clare

Colleen Dewhurst is a Canadian icon, remembered for her countless roles on the stage and, to Anne fans especially, for the weight and beauty she brought to the role of Marilla Cuthbert.  This August marks the 20th anniversary of her passing.

Fans of Megan Follows are often asking what the iconic actress is up to now. The Globe and Mail recently sat down with the talented star as she prepares for the Vancouver premiere of her latest endeavor – a new play called This, in which she plays a recently widowed woman who is trying to cope with middle age, as well as being a single mother.

Ginger is the New Blonde?

Written by Clare

Anne: A red-haired person cannot play the Lily Maid. Tennyson would never approve.
Diana: Your complexion is just as fair as Ruby's. And anyway, your hair's darker now than just plain old red.
Anne: Really?
Jane Andrews: I'd say it's definitely auburn, and that's sort-of close to blonde.

"Matthew had sheepishly unfolded the dress form its paper swathings and held it out with a deprecatory glance at Marilla, who feinged to be contemptuously filling the teapot, but nevertheless watched the scene out of the corner of her eye with a rather interested air.

No Ordinary Anne Fan

Not too long ago we directed your attention to a heated debate rising between literature and TV lovers worldwide.  One man dared to ask the question of who is cooler: Anne Shirley or Laura Ingalls Wilder?  He even started an online poll about it.  And that one man was Darren Garnick - a writer, filmmaker, blogger, father and self-professed fan of both famous heroines.

Anne Shirley vs. Laura Ingalls?

Written by Clare

Growing up, two of my greatest loves were Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie.  Each holds an important place in my childhood (and current) memories, but I view the two series very differently.  It never occurred to me that people could argue that one heroine was better than the other.  Until now…

A Video Tribute to Mrs. Rachel Lynde

Written by Clare

When Kevin Sullivan was casting Anne of Green Gables, there were some actors that he instantly knew would be a good fit.  He recalls that Patricia Hamilton, the actress who played the indefatigable Rachel Lynde, was one of them.  She made the character of Rachel Lynde all that she was, Kevin says.  Whether she was playing the busy-body best friend of Marilla Cuthbert in all four Anne of Green Gables films, Road to Avonlea or later, in Sullivan’s Anne: The Animated Series, Hamilton made her mark on the world of Anne.

Jonathan Crombie Answers His Fans!

Written by Clare

Not too long ago, Anne of Green Gables fans got the chance to submit their most burning questions to actor Jonathan Crombie, who played Gilbert Blythe.  Now, the accomplished actor – who many idolize as the perfect leading man – has answered!  You’ll get insight into the actor himself, as well as his favourite moments of filming Anne.

Though all involved in making Anne of Green Gables believed in the uniqueness of the production, some of the actors never quite got used to the outpouring of fan affection after the series premiered. Colleen Dewhurst, especially, was overwhelmed with the impact the series had on people of all ages, nationalities and gender.  Here is a direct account, taken from her autobiography, of the immediate affects of the broadcast.

Crombie and Follows Reunite

More than 10 years lapsed between the making of Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel and The Continuing Story, but that didn’t stop Jonathan Crombie (Gilbert Blythe) and Megan Follows (Anne Shirley) from easily falling back into their on-screen relationship.

“Working with Colleen, as I did on Anne of Green Gables and number of other projects , was like entering a privileged world of honesty and humor.” - Kevin Sullivan

In Colleen Dewhurst’s autobiography, there is a segment in which Kevin Sullivan wrote about his experience with the talented actress and what having her play Marilla meant to him.

The Gilbert Auditions

Written by Clare

The search for the right actor to play Gilbert Blythe – a character that many consider to be the epitome of the perfect man – was crucial to the success of Anne of Green Gables. He had to have the right chemistry with Megan Follows, as well as hold his own among the many veteran actors in the film, such as Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth.

Ever wonder if those voices you’re hearing in the animated film Anne: Journey to Green Gables sound slightly familiar?  Odds are, they are familiar.  Here’s a look at just a few of the memorable actors from Kevin Sullivan’s Anne of Green Gables, Road to Avonlea and Wind at my Back series who lent their voices to the new feature in reprisals of both old and new characters.

Mad Men Star Idolizes Anne

Christina Hendricks, who is best known for her role as vivacious redhead Joan Holloway on the hit show Mad Men, reveals that her true hair colour is actually blond.  It wasn’t until she dyed her hair to look like Anne Shirley when she was a little girl that she actually began to feel like herself.

“From the moment the camera touches Mr. Farnsworth’s face you know everything about him and you love him.” – Colleen Dewhurst

In honour of Father’s Day, we decided to take a look at perhaps the most moving portrayal of fatherhood in the many Sullivan series.

The Search for Anne

Written by Clare

Finding the right person to play Anne Shirley was perhaps the most important decision in the making of Anne of Green Gables.  She had to be the right age – mature enough to handle the lead role in a three hour miniseries, but able to maintain the innocence of her character. With millions of people around the world having preconceived notions of what Anne should look like, she also had to have the right image.  Here’s a look at how the stars aligned to make Megan Follows the lead everyone loves.

Richard Farnsworth lets viewers in on the source of shyness in Matthew, his character in Anne of Green Gables, in this on-set interview (see video below).  Fans will find out what he thinks of Megan Follows’ acting and how he always wanted to work with Colleen Dewhurst.  Farnsworth also responds to inquiries about his own shyness, what kind of roles he suits and whether the character he plays is afraid of women.

Check out this exclusive behind-the-scenes video in which Jonathan Crombie, who plays Gilbert Blythe, talks about working with the cast of Anne of Green Gables.  Crombie fans may be surprised to know that he had never been in front of a camera before stepping foot on the Sullivan set!  It’s hard to believe that the actor who played the role of the ideal man had only done high school plays before Anne.

“It’s not difficult because he comes with a very clear idea and my job is just to transform his ideas into music.” – Peter Breiner on working with Kevin Sullivan

The Man Behind the Music

Written by Clare

Just as Anne Shirley’s words form some of the most memorable quotes, so too does the musical score of Anne of Green Gables form an emotional memory for the film’s viewers.  You can hear the first few bars of Anne’s theme music, written by composer Hagood Hardy, and be instantly transported back to the first time you saw Anne walking through the woods on her way to Hammond’s Mill.  As part of ‘music week’ at Sullivan Entertainment, here’s a look at the history of the man who created these lasting notes.

A Simpler Time?

Written by Clare

If you are swayed to believe that you were born in the wrong era, and should have lived in the time of Anne Shirley, then perhaps Jonathan Crombie’s take on what it was like to live at the turn of the 20th century may resonate with you.

Any female fan of Anne of Green Gables has, at some point, wished for her very own Gilbert Blythe: a strong, loyal young man who will stay with her through thick and thin. Strangely enough, Gilbert’s love affair with Anne started when he called her “Carrots” and got a slate smashed over his head in return. From that moment on, Gilbert was smitten with the feisty, red – haired orphan but his affections were not easily… or quickly… returned.

High Fashion at Green Gables

Megan Follows (Anne Shirley) and Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert) did such an authentic job of portraying women at the beginning of the 20th century, you would never have guessed that both actresses really disliked wearing Victorian corsets under their dresses.
