A Toast to Avonlea

Comparisons of Love

Felicity:  "It must have been exciting being a sailor, seeing the world."
Gus:  "Well, I traveled near halfway around the world. Never saw a sight as lovely as what I'm lookn' at right here."

Gus and Felicity exchanged these words with each other in the episode “Otherwise Engaged”.  At this point in their relationship, they stood at a crossroads – Gus with plans to make Felicity his wife and Felicity with possible plans to venture into medical school.

Felicity King’s creation of the Foundling Home in Avonlea marked the beginning of her new life after Gus disappeared at sea.  Though all of her hopes seemed to be lost, four orphaned children found living in the abandoned estate would make Felicity see that her life had purpose again.

After the success of Kevin Sullivan’s Anne of Green Gables films, in 1989, executives from CBC and The Disney Channel wanted him to consider creating an entire series out of Anne.  But Kevin didn’t think there was enough material to do this, nor did he want to base an entire show around one central character.

Gus Pike and the Pull of the Sea

Gus Pike is one of the most unique characters on Road to Avonlea because of his refusal to live an ordinary life.  There were moments when he gave up his dreams in order to conform to island life and further his chances of building a steady relationship with Felicity.  But when he is confronted with choosing a career at the White Sands Hotel or experiencing more adventures as a sailor, we see what a deep pull the sea has on Gus.
